Unknown gunmen on Thursday afternoon attacked a police checkpoint around the Maryland axis, Independence Layout Enugu.

An eyewitness account who spoke on condition of anonymity told Daily Independent that the gunmen numbering about 6 came in Mercedes Benz and Toyota Jeep with masks on their faces.

He said the sporadically shooting caused pandemonium in the area as people ran helter-skelter for safety.

He said “I was in front of my shop when the policemen stopped the gunmen and asked them to pack and come out from their cars.

“Immediately they came out from the cars, and started shouting and shot 3 policemen who died on the spot while other policemen at the checkpoint abandoned their Hilux and ran away,” he said.

It was learnt that the incident which occurred around 12 pm caused tension in the area as most of the shops in the area were already under lock and key when our correspondent visited the area.

When contacted the police spokesman of Enugu state command, Daniel Ndukwe said “Information surrounding the incident is still sketchy.

“Meanwhile, manhunt of the hoodlums have been initiated. Further development will be communicated, please,” he said. (Daily Independent)
