Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, delivered a keynote speech at Godfrey Okoye University, emphasizing the urgent need for judicial reform in Nigeria and paying tribute to the late Justice Anthony Nnaemeka Aniagolu.
In a recent statement shared on his social media handle, Peter Obi, highlighted the importance of judicial reform in Nigeria and paid tribute to the late Justice Anthony Nnaemeka Aniagolu.
Honoring Justice Aniagolu’s Legacy
Obi had the privilege of delivering a keynote speech at the Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu, where he discussed “The Role of the Judiciary in Shaping Nigeria’s Future.” The occasion was the 5th Memorial of Justice Anthony Nnaemeka Aniagolu, one of Nigeria’s most esteemed jurists who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court from 1978 to 1987.
In his speech, Obi highlighted Justice Aniagolu’s illustrious career and his unwavering integrity in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the exemplary service of Justice Aniagolu and other revered Nigerian judges.
Addressing the Decline in the Judicial System
While acknowledging that the Nigerian judiciary still boasts a few outstanding judges, Obi noted an undeniable decline in the system. He expressed concern over the commodification of justice and the tendency to deliver rulings in favor of the highest bidder.
Obi stressed that when the rule of law is compromised, the most vulnerable members of society are disproportionately affected, and the fabric of society begins to fray. The integrity of institutions, the protection of human rights, and the stability of the nation are all jeopardized.
The Urgent Need for Judicial Reform
In his address, Obi emphasized the urgent need to revitalize the Nigerian judicial system by safeguarding its independence and promoting the values of character, competence, capability, compassion, and integrity among jurists and political leaders.
Obi believes that by prioritizing the pursuit of justice and ensuring that the rule of law remains a beacon of hope and a safeguard against tyranny, oppression, and injustice, Nigeria can build a better future for all its citizens.
