Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its handling of subsidy removal reforms in Nigeria.
During an interview with News Central TV, Obi expressed concerns that the government might soon extend its subsidy cuts to essential resources, suggesting that if given the opportunity, Tinubu would impose charges on even the air Nigerians breathe.
Obi emphasized the need for transparency regarding the allocation of funds from removed subsidies, stating, “We have to show what is being removed and where it is being applied. You don’t know what the subsidy is today.”
He pointed out that while the government claims to have eliminated subsidies on petrol and electricity, there seems to be a lack of clarity on the actual benefits or consequences of these actions.
He warned that the administration’s approach could lead to further financial burdens on citizens, quipping that the government might eventually charge for air if it continues on its current path
