British actor Idris Elba is set to take on the role of Okonkwo, the central character in Chinua Achebe’s literary classic, “Things Fall Apart,” in a new television adaptation by the American entertainment company A24.
Currently, the series is in its early stages and has not yet found a streaming platform or network for release.
“Things Fall Apart” follows the journey of Okonkwo, who stands as one of literature’s most iconic figures—a formidable African warrior and leader dedicated to safeguarding his people and their traditions. As British colonizers disrupt his world, Okonkwo’s fight to retain his power and heritage leads to a poignant and devastating conflict. His steadfast determination, which ultimately becomes his tragic flaw, highlights the struggle between strength, vulnerability, and the necessity of change.
Elba will also serve as an executive producer for the series, alongside Gina Carter under their 22Summers production banner. Other executive producers include David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka through Yoruba Saxon, as well as Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks.
The story of “Things Fall Apart” has been adapted for the screen before, first as a film in 1971 and then as a mini-series in 1987, featuring the celebrated Nigerian actor Pete Edochie as Okonkwo, the esteemed wrestling champion of Umuofia.
Chidi Achebe, son of the late author Chinua Achebe, has publicly supported this long-awaited adaptation, expressing his gratitude for the project. He stated, “To God be the Glory! We thank God for making all things possible and our late husband, Dad, and uncle for leaving the world with such a great legacy.” Chidi also expressed appreciation for A24, noting that the adaptation has been in development for nearly two decades.
