In a groundbreaking feat that underscores the rising academic excellence in Nigeria, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has emerged as the grand champion of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Championship, defeating elite schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The competition, held virtually on June 19, 2025, was a collaborative initiative between Bring It On Africa and Debate Mate UK. It aimed to foster cross-cultural understanding while enhancing students’ critical thinking, public speaking, and analytical skills.

Participating on Nigeria’s side were four highly regarded schools: St. John Vianney Science College (Anambra), St. Augustine’s College (Jos), Britarch Schools (Abuja), and Sure Start School (Abuja). Representing the UK were Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

Following rigorous preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney advanced to the final, having skillfully bested both Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School. In an electrifying all-Nigerian final round against St. Augustine’s College, Jos, the Anambra team delivered a commanding performance that sealed their title as champions.

Representing St. John Vianney were standout debaters Chibueze Jennifer, Obiokafor Catherine, Eneoli Benjamin, and Onwuegbusi Valentine, under the mentorship of Coach John Onuigbo, with support from Chiagozie Udorji. Reflecting on their triumph, Chibueze Jennifer remarked,

“This is a dream come true. Competing against top UK schools was intense, but our preparation and teamwork carried us through. This proves Nigerian students can thrive on any global stage.”

The school’s director, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma (popularly known as Fr. Ebube Muonso), praised the team for embodying the school’s values of academic excellence, moral discipline, and global relevance.

“This victory validates our mission at St. John Vianney. Our students didn’t just win they proved they belong in global discourse. This is just the beginning,” he said.

The debate championship first of its kind offered a platform for students from both nations to tackle contemporary global issues such as technology, history, and environmental sustainability. The event not only celebrated intellectual prowess but also promoted meaningful intercultural engagement.

As champions, St. John Vianney Science College will now represent Nigeria at the extensional debate rounds in London, scheduled for December 2025. St. Augustine’s College, as runner-up, also secured a spot in the London event. The UK’s Shireland High School took third place overall.

The competition marks a defining moment in international academic collaboration, showcasing the immense talent and potential of Nigerian students on the world stage.
