Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent election held in Edo State.
In a post shared via his X handle, Obi criticized the process, stating that it did not reflect the democratic values Nigerians have chosen for electing their leaders.
He described the election as a clear case of state capture, highlighting how it further undermines the democratic process. Obi warned that any nation with a deeply flawed leadership recruitment system is bound to face dire consequences, a reality he believes Nigeria is already experiencing.
“I urge those in authority not to allow this situation to stand or depend on it to remain in power,” Obi stated, emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic integrity. He stressed the need for proper use of tools like IReV and BVAS, which were introduced to safeguard the electoral process from rampant falsification.
Addressing those involved in manipulating the system, Obi reminded them that their time in power is not permanent. He warned that the destruction they are causing today will come back to haunt them and impact future generations.
He also called on university lecturers and others complicit in enabling electoral fraud to reflect on the long-term damage they are inflicting on the nation’s democracy.
Obi reaffirmed his stance that politics should not be about seizing power but about rescuing and rebuilding the country for the benefit of all citizens, regardless of their background. He reiterated his commitment to creating a new, truly democratic Nigeria, which he believes is still very much possible.
